Canonical choose to make this a two step process. To answer your larger question: yes, the two steps you outlined are a validation of the iso file, if they succeed! You want to establish that the iso file you have is unaltered from the one built by Canonical. (Here I am using iso and hash files I happen to have handy on my system.) A successful match looks like this: $ sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS The thing to do then, is to see what sha256sum is trying to tell you. It would do that if the hash did not match, because you are filtering everything but a successful result. I gather that sha256sum|grep prints no output. I don't know anything about the "six steps," and I don't want to chase down your screencap PNGs. I'm going to be a bit brusque here sorry.
